True Worshipers

21 Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.

22 You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews.

23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.

24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

John 4:21-24 NLT

We are going to break this down, but first for some historical context.  Jews and Samaritans did not get along, at all. Jews considered the Samaritans, who were gentiles, to be dogs. So it is a huge shock first of all that Jesus is even talking to this woman. For many Christians this piece of historical context may be common knowledge, however it is key to explaining this passage, and understanding the heart of God.

So the first two verses, after the initial shock and some time into the conversation with the Samaritan woman, Jesus makes two strong remarks. First He tells her that it won’t matter where they worship God, which is important, because at that point the Samaritans where not aloud to worship in Jerusalem with the Jews. Then in the second verse He states that salvation comes through the Jews.

Interesting right? But why the Jews? Simply read the verse backwards, it was because they knew the one that they were worshipping, unlike the Samaritans.

So if the promise of salvation was for the Jews then why was Jesus even bothering with some strange Samaritan woman?  Because “The time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. God wants people who will worship Him in spirit and in truth, he doesnt wants Jews becuase they are so-called Jews, he wants true worshipers. The following verse tells us why, 24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

Before Jewish law ever came into existance God has been faithful to those who worshiped Him in spirit and in truth. Adam, Moses, Enoch, and others all walked with God through their faith, through their true worship, not because they desired to follow a rulebook, but because they truly wanted to worship God in the spirit.

In Matthew 15:8 Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah, saying 8 ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. He is talking about religious leaders in this passage, not true worshipers. They did not recognize the truth of God, nor could they discern His spirit, much like many Jews and Christians alike today.

So you see, Salvation came through the Jews ONLY because they were anointed to recieve the promise of salvation from God, only because they held the promise of salvation, however, they were also commissioned to bring the good news to the gentiles, to give freely as they have recieved. That is why Jesus told the Samaritan woman that the time had come that it didn’t matter about Jew or Gentile, because there is no segregation in the truth, nor is there any disunity in the spirit, therefore all those who partake of the spirit of God through Christ Jesus are true worshipers, and no longer Jew and Gentile, but a living child of God.

Let us not be teachers of religous law any longer, let us rise up as true worshipers, let us refuse to be anything other than such worshipers, who will worship God in spirit and in truth!

And this is the truth, that outside of Christ, we are enemies of God, and through His atoning blood, Christ Jesus brings us to unity with the Father God through faith in Him, and that is good news for everyone!
